If you’ve been on the platform long enough, you’ve probably noticed that some of the world’s biggest brands have a profile on Instagram. Currently, there are over 25 million business profiles on the platform. Each one of these businesses uses the platform to reach out to a broader, global audience, and they have even taken their marketing efforts to the platform itself.
It’s no secret: more and more companies reach out to Instagram “influencers” - big and small scale - for sponsorships and affiliate deals, thus giving them the option to make a substantial income through social media (fun fact: a sponsored post on Instagram can earn you $300, on average).
Brands won’t give you a second glance if you’re not active on the platform. This means that you need to make sure you’re not only constantly online and uploading content, but also continually growing in numbers. Ultimately, these brands want to reach as many people as they can, which is why they use influencers in the first place. If your account is “stuck” on a certain number of followers and your posts aren’t generating more engagement, the brand won’t like it.
This is why you need to make sure you’re relevant. Not only in content, but in numbers, as well. It’s well known by now that the more content you upload and when you use the right hashtags, the bigger your chances are to be discovered by other users. However, the algorithm also looks at your numbers - mostly engagement rates - before it promotes your posts on the Explore tab. Being a social media entity begins with having the right networking skills. If you want brands (and people) to notice you, you have to make friends with the right people. Tagging huge companies, however, when you’re not a “huge” influencer yourself, could be very frustrating and disheartening. When you’re just starting, it’s best to tag the smaller brands and companies, because they will be more likely to look at your posts.
If you’re feeling particularly brave and confident, you can always reach out to the brand directly. A lot of influencers don’t just sit around and wait for a brand to miraculously “find” them - they are proactive in their approach, and they are shameless about it, too.
If you feel brave enough to reach out to a brand, you’ll have to be smart about it. Don’t just point and shoot blindly.
