Content on YouTube is expected to be engaging, educational, interesting, and entertaining. It is even better if it turns out to be a combination of all these vital elements. This serves to be the basis of any successful YouTube channel out there. Once you have promoted your videos online, you would like to encourage the viewers to subscribe to the channel for your future videos. You would also like them to share or watch other videos that your channel presents.

While it has been quite a long period, still YouTube finally came up with end screens for its users. End screens can be defined as visual overlay elements that appear around the last 15-20 seconds of the video. These can be denoted as the mobile-friendly versions of annotations. End screens on YouTube videos are known to be helpful in building the respective viewership. This is because they appear on both desktop as well as mobile devices. In this post, we will help you unravel all that you need to know about end screens for YouTube videos and how you can use them to your advantage.

What are YouTube End Screens?

End screens on YouTube appear as clickable links that viewers tend to observe once they have gone through one of the videos on your channel. Using the same, you can prompt the viewers to subscribe to your YouTube channel, click to go through more channel videos, or follow links to some external websites.

Additionally, end screens for YouTube videos are also known to be used for:

  • Allowing the viewers to go through other videos of your channel
  • Asking the viewers to subscribe to your YouTube channel
  • Offering merchandise
  • Sending traffic to some approved website
  • Getting fans involved in the crowdfunding campaign

End screens are currently made available only on mobile and desktop screens. They are not known to work on Television screens, YouTube Kids, or YouTube Music. Moreover, 360-degree videos are also not providing support to end screens currently.

Recently, YouTube has gone forward with removing annotations to serve as the favor of end screens. This is because larger buttons tend to be more mobile-friendly. Traditionally, annotations did not work great on mobile screens. Therefore, for creating a better user experience, YouTube has considered to phase them out completely.

Adding YouTube End Screens on New Videos

Here are some steps to follow when you wish to add YouTube end screens to your videos:

  • When you are editing YouTube videos, you should aim at dedicating at least 10 seconds of the end of the video for end screen. Then, you can consider exporting the video. The final seconds of the video can be either a plain, black video, or you might consider going creative. You can go for creating a customized end screen animation or image to play at the video’s end. Make sure that you are making the end screen for at least 10 seconds such that the viewers are given proper time to ensure selection at the video’s end.
  • Log into the respective YouTube account and then, go for uploading the video.
  • Navigate to the settings of the video and click on the option End Screen. You should also click on the Annotations tab.
  • Go for choosing the desired template or format the YouTube end screen. One of the easiest things to do is choosing the desired template of the end screen. You can get access to multiple looks and options. However, you can customize the template of your liking. You can even consider adding or removing elements like video links. Once you have access to the desired layout set, you can simply apply the given layout to future videos. This can be done by selecting the option “Import from video” on the next video on YouTube.
  • Analyze whether you want the video links to be single-time videos or full-range playlists. Then you should consider choosing which playlists or videos you would like to appear. The subscribe button would default to the profile picture of the YouTube page. With the help of the external link button, you can consider uploading the custom image or artwork. External links are required to be approved URLs. Then, you can consider linking to items like links to products, downloads, or more information. You can then move as well as resize the elements that you would consider as fit.
  • Consider adjusting the timeline of the end screen. You can make all the elements showing up at the same time. You can even consider staggering them. Ensure that you will require at least 10 seconds at the video’s end. However, you can certainly consider extending the elements while making the end screen to last longer.
  • Click on the option Save. The end screen would now appear at the video’s end.

Addition of YouTube End Screens to the Existing Videos

If there happens to be an old video to which you wish add the end screen, then you will be required to remove the annotations. You can then consider adding end screens to the respective videos. However, it is important to keep in mind that as you have not dedicated any animation or black video for the end screen, the links would appear on top of the footage for the last 10-20 seconds. It becomes harder to convert old videos into the ones having a proper end screen.
